A Basic Guide To Understanding Registry Cleaners
2009-09-28
Registry cleaners are an essential part of every tech department's tool kit, but they're also useful programs for pretty much any computer that's experiencing slowdowns, crashes and blue screens. It also doesn't cost much to buy a registry cleaner, so they're gaining popularity for home use on Windows XP machines. Here's a basic look at how registry cleaners operate, how they can make a computer work faster and why a registry cleaner is a good tool for pretty much any computer on an occasional basis.
First of all, it's important to understand exactly what a "registry" is. On a Windows XP machine, the registry is a file that keeps track of all installed programs, all the back from the day that the operating system was initially installed. Each of these entries in the registry contains information that the operating system needs to operate the program correctly and efficiently. Many times after installing a program, you'll be prompted to restart a computer - this is usually because the registry needs to be edited. However, over time, the registry can become overloaded with poor quality entries, especially after a lot of programs are installed. This makes the use of a Windows XP registry cleaner necessary in order to keep the computer operating properly. Otherwise, frequent crashes, bugs and slowdowns can make a computer painful to use.
A good Windows XP registry cleaner operates exactly as advertised; it scans through each registry entry, looking for problems. "Problems" refers to bad entries - entries that point to something that no longer exists or entries that are unnecessarily complex. Once these have been identified, the entries are cleaned. Most registry cleaners will also make a backup of the original version of the registry, just in case a computer user wants to go back to an older version. This can come in handy, for example, if the computer seems to crash more often after the registry is cleaned than it did before. Once a registry is cleaned, the computer will run much faster. To make it even more efficient, it can be paired with the use of Scandisk and a disk defragmentation program. These two things are automatically included in the Windows XP operating system, and should be ran about once a week to help the hard drive operate as efficiently as possible.
Registry cleaners are extremely simple to operate, and work almost automatically with a very slight learning curve. Be sure to back up your old registry if given the option, and be sure to read the operating instructions for the program. They don't need to be run very often, but running a registry cleaner every few months can greatly improve a computer's speed.
