Are There Any Disadvantages To Running A Registry Cleaner

2009-12-11

Over time, Windows-based computers inevitably slow down regardless of the specs they are equipped with. This dip in system performance can usually be traced to errors, invalid entries and cluttered information that accumulates as a result of regular use. With a registry cleaner, these errors and unnecessary entries can be corrected and deleted, allowing the system to maximize its resources, run faster and become reliable. Windows registry cleaners are programs that clean up and refine sluggish systems. Unfortunately, they are far from being the perfect solution. There are certain risks and disadvantages associated with running a registry cleaner that every computer user should know.

The main purpose of a Windows registry cleaner is to seek out redundant and/or invalid entries. Ironically, this function can also have an adverse effect on the system. Registry cleaners may not perform the necessary steps required in order to correct what it perceives to be an invalid entry or to distinguish a genuine error from one that is not. It cannot, for example, determine what types of effects the removal of a particular key will have to the computer system. It will simply remove it without considering what might happen as a result. Or, it may remove a key that is integral for Windows use, disregarding the negative outcome to the system. Either of these can lead to problems in terms of system functionality and stability.

Another disadvantage to running a Windows registry cleaner is that the program itself may not come from a trusted source. Many registry cleaners are used by unscrupulous programmers and marketers to spread malware, such as viruses and spyware. Once downloaded into a computer system, the piggybacking Trojan application will be able to install dangerous applications or just downright annoying rogue programs. A good example of these rogue programs is "WinFixer." The fact that registry cleaners cannot detect or remove malware and spyware only exacerbates this problem. Some unreliable registry cleaners may also be nothing more than false ads with an urgent call-to-action message insisting that the user visit an online site to purchase a registry cleaner at a high price regardless of the real status of the system.

While there are many dependable registry cleaners, some may be illegitimate or downright fake. Although cheap, they can come with a host of problems. They could, for example, modify values in the registry that will result to serious problems with the operating system. A rogue registry cleaner could make an already slow system more sluggish and lead to system crashes.

If you choose to purchase a registry cleaner, do your research so you can be rest assured that it's doing all good, and no harm to your PC.
