Are There Registry Cleaners For Macs?

2009-11-04

As many Windows users know, registry cleaners are very useful programs that can be used for maintenance and trouble-shooting. When run occasionally, this software makes a computer much faster and helps users to avoid the annoying hassle of having to deal with sudden freezes, crashes and other bugs. Because they're such a good first defense against a range of computer problems, owners of non-Windows computers often wonder whether there's something similar to a registry cleaner for their systems. Many Mac OS users, in particularly, wonder what registry cleaner options are available to them. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), there aren't typical registry cleaners for Mac computers.

Windows registry cleaners work by accessing the Windows registry, which is a small file that stores various bits of information about the programs installed on a computer. Every time a program is installed or removed, the registry is changed. Over time, a registry can become damaged as bad entries are made to the file. When a registry is damaged, it points to files and settings that aren't actually on a computer, making it difficult for the computer to run correctly. Windows computers with these registries will often be much slower than they were when they were first purchased. They may also crash frequently when certain programs are running. Windows registry cleaners work by eliminating all of the bad entries in a computer registry, restoring the machine to the point where it's able to function stably and quickly again. The system runs just like new. The entire process of running a registry cleaner in Windows usually only takes several minutes, which is why it's considered one of the best ways to improve computer performance.

Unfortunately, Mac users don't have this simple go-to option. The Macintosh operating system doesn't have a registry cleaner for a very simple reason - there's no registry. The lack of a registry is not a problem with the operating system; it's just a very different structure than what Windows has in place. The program is simply designed to operate without a registry. However, Mac OS users aren't completely out of luck if their machines begin to slow down or crash - there are a variety of third party programs that can speed up Mac computers. They usually operate by clearing space, optimizing settings and eliminating minor bugs that may build up over time in newer Mac OS releases. There are also system utilities in the OS itself that can speed up a Macintosh computer.

Mac users shouldn't worry about the lack of a registry cleaner, but Windows users should be sure to pick one up. They are a great tool for keeping a system running smoothly.
