How To Identify If Your Windows Registry Needs Help

2009-10-26

Every computer owner fears problems that might make their machines slower or unusable. That's why good maintenance is important. However, the regular maintenance programs offered by the Windows operating system might not be enough in some cases - especially where registry problems are involved. That is when registry cleaners come in.

The Windows registry is a small file that contains information that every program on the computer uses to function. New entries are created and deleted when programs are installed, uninstalled or sometimes when they're simply ran. If this system is not maintained properly, a few bad entries can plague the Windows registry with problems. When this happens, a computer will slow down, crash and occasionally display a blue screen (the infamous blue screen of death). Needless to say, experiencing any one of these scenarios is not a situation you want to find yourself in.

Of course, many computer users don't know the signs of problems with the Windows registry. Usually, bad and misleading entries will become apparent when trying to load specific programs, or while using those programs. If you notice that some of your software seems to be running much slower than usual, there's a decent chance that there's a problem in the Windows registry needing to be corrected. When bugs suddenly become present and your software begins to crash, that's another sign. Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell just through observation whether the registry is the cause of slowdown or if it's something completely different. This is why Windows users should employ a registry cleaner from time to time just to be sure.

Registry cleaners are programs that scan through the registry for bad or misleading entries that may be causing problems. The cleaner usually only takes a few minutes to run, and will ultimately be able to spot any problematic portions of your registry at the end of a scan. Most computers have a few bad entries in their registries, and these may not cause problems. But, occasionally a computer will have dozens or even hundreds of registry errors, which need to be treated with a registry cleaner immediately. After the scan, a registry cleaner allows a user to back up the old Windows registry and fix all of the issues found during the scan. Regardless of how often you use your computer, it's a good idea to use a registry scanner to look for errors every once in a while. Catching and cleaning registry problems early can help your computer last longer, and can make it as fast as the day you'd bought it. What's more, registry cleaners can make a computer more stable, potentially saving hours of headaches caused by a computer when it suddenly locks up and shuts down.
