How Much Space A Registry Cleaner Clears On Your Registry
2010-01-22
Registry cleaners are often used to speed up a computer and eliminate many of the minor problems that can cause programs to lag while opening, crash, or freeze up at random times. The programs are certainly very useful, especially on older machines that have slowed down over the years--they're a lifesaver to computer owners that want more speed, but don't necessarily have a huge budget to put into fixing up the computer completely. Still, many computer users wonder exactly how much space a registry cleaner opens up on a Windows registry file. While this is a valid question, the answer can be fairly complex, and in dealing with the registry it's sometimes advantageous not to think in terms of "space", but rather in ability.
First of all, it's helpful to consider how the Windows registry functions. The registry contains "entries" for every program and a number of files installed to your Windows computer, and it helps the operating system open those files or programs when the user sends a command to do so. Unfortunately, the registry isn't perfect, and sometimes entries are left in the system after files and programs are deleted. Sometimes, entries are written incorrectly. In either case, something needs to be done, or the registry becomes too bogged down and Windows can't process commands correctly. This leads to the slowdown, crashes, etc. that many computer users are familiar with. Registry cleaners will go in and correct or delete many of these bad entries, and the better programs on the market will clear out quite a few bad areas of the registry that might have been causing computer problems.
Therefore, the amount of space freed up by a Windows registry cleaner will usually be proportional to the size of the registry file itself. Really, though, the amount of processing power and freedom of use that a registry cleaner opens up is the more significant issue. Because the Windows registry is such an important file, a computer will gain a lot of speed when it's optimized, and also lose quite a bit of power when the registry isn't optimized. The function of a good registry cleaner is to keep the registry working in the way that it was intended. The size of that file is dependent on the computer, and isn't a concern.
When buying a registry cleaner, be sure to look for an up-to-date program. Pay more attention to user reviews, and less attention to claims about the amount of "space" freed up on the Windows registry. You'll stand a better chance of finding a great registry cleaner.
