What Makes One Registry Cleaner More Aggressive Than Another
2009-12-14
Using a registry cleaner on your computer has quite a few major benefits. Complicated technological problems are swept away or fixed, and a computer can run faster and with much greater stability (meaning that it's less prone to major errors and bugs that can cause crashes). If you're trying to pick a product from the vast range of registry cleaners available, you may have noticed some registry cleaners claiming to be "aggressive," while others claim the same about their competition. It's a matter of discerning what the means and if these claims are really true.
Whether or not a particular cleaner is aggressive usually refers to how it looks for problems in the Windows registry. A registry cleaner is only as good as the database it uses to find bad entries in your computer's registry file. These databases are installed with the cleaner, and the manufacturer often updates them regularly. The cleaner uses the database when scanning your Windows registry, looking for problems (referred to as bad entries) that might be causing slowdown or other computer issues.
The most aggressive registry cleaners are cleaners with very strict entry databases. They search for all types of bad entries, and may regard any entries that they don't recognize as "bad." Aggressive registry cleaners are therefore more likely to find problems with the Windows registry. They're also more likely to fix these issues by moving, fixing or deleting these bad entries before they cause computer problems. However, they're also more likely to find and fix problems that aren't actually there. For example, entries might be marked as bad when they're actually fully functioning registry entries. When these good entries are "fixed" or removed, Windows can begin to experience issues, and users might find it quite difficult to replace the good entries that were "fixed." Most of the time, this isn't a very likely possibility, and aggressive registry cleaners are usually considered a good thing - especially if they're kept up to date.
Regularly updating your registry cleaner can ensure a minimal chance of any unexpected results. It's also a good idea to back up your Windows registry before running a Windows registry cleaner. This way, if your cleaner does something that you didn't expect and you notice more issues after running it, you can revert back to the earlier version of your registry quite easily. Many of the newer registry cleaners automatically back up the registry before running, or provide an easy way for the computer user to back up his own registry file.
When you take a few minor precautions, running a cleaner on your registry is completely safe and can often help to keep your computer running like new.
